Fencing is a sport that develops the mind and body. For centuries fencing has been used to improve coordination, reaction time, and problem solving skills. Fencing helps to improve overall health and stamina. While athleticism is helpful, fencing involves a lot more brainpower than many sports. So with practice it is possible for the quick witted to defeat the quick footed.
At the Red Stick School of Fencing, students learn all the necessary techniques, strategies, and analytical skills to enjoy the sport for a lifetime. Classes are designed to be fun and provide a low-pressure environment for students to learn at their own pace. Whether a student wishes to enjoy the fun of recreational fencing or the thrill of competition, RSSF can provide the instruction for them to succeed.
Classes encourage:
Campers will be treated to a full week of fencing lessons and activities. Campers will receive 2 one-hour group classes in the basics of fencing each day along with activities to improve fitness and coordination. Campers are expected to bring their own lunch and should come dressed ready to exercise in t-shirts, long pants (like sweats), and sneakers (no crocs, sandals, or boots). During the lunch break classic fencing movies will be viewed. Fencing-focused games and craft activities will also be done. At the end of the week the campers will have a team competition to test their new fencing skills.
Who should attend the camp?
Anyone ages 7 to 12 who is interested in learning the sport of fencing. The camp is designed with the beginner in mind, but those with experience may also benefit from the lessons.
Is there a lunch provided?
Campers are expected to bring their own lunch, including drinks and a couple of snacks, we recommend fruit. There is only a small refrigerator on site so lunches requiring refrigeration should be brought in a small cooler. There will be a cooler available as well but it will have limited space. There will be cold drinks, protein bars, and some snack foods available for purchase. Please make any dietary restrictions known to camp organizers.
What clothes should campers wear?
Campers should come dressed to exercise; T-shirts, long pants (sweats are recommended) and sneakers (no crocs, sandals, or boots). There are changing rooms available for those who wish to bring a change of clothes.
What does the fee cover?
Fencing instruction and all daily activities. Including the use of all necessary protective gear and one bottle of water per day. Students are welcome to bring their own gear if they wish; it must pass a safety inspection.
What is a “typical” day at the Camp?
The day begins with warm up exercises and games designed to strengthen and stretch those muscles used in fencing. This followed by instruction covering basic fencing skills. Craft activities, games and open fencing come after the lessons. A break for lunch and video/movie involving fencing precedes the second set of fencing lessons. We end the day with open fencing and cool down activities.
What are the facilities like?
The Red Stick School of Fencing is a 4000 square foot facility devoted to the sport of fencing. There are 8 regulation fencing strips and enough gear for 30+ fencers. We have separate bathrooms and changing rooms for boys and girls and a small waiting area.
My child wears glasses, is this an issue?
No, the glasses will fit easily under the masks.
My child has asthma or a similar medical condition, is this a problem?
With any physical activity there is always an element of risk, but fencing as a sport easily accommodates many limitations. Be sure your child has been properly medicated before they arrive at camp. Camp organizers cannot accept any medications with which to treat your child; inhalers are however welcome. Make sure the organizers are informed of any limitations to physical activity.
What precautions are taken to insure safety?
Safety of the campers is our primary concern. Campers are taught proper safety rules and techniques before they are allowed to fence or handle the equipment. Children are never allowed to use the equipment without wearing the proper safety gear. First Aid materials are always on hand and at least one CPR trained adult is present at all times.
My child is not very athletic. Is this a problem?
Unlike most sports there is no ideal body type for fencing. One visit to our school and you will see fencers of every shape, size, age, body type, and athletic level. With proper training any body type can be successful at fencing. We try to cater our teaching techniques to help the student reach their fullest potential.
My child has a disability. Can they still attend the camp?
While children with disabilities are welcome to take fencing lessons at the school, we will be unable to devote the proper attention towards training their skills in the camp environment. Please contact us so that we can arrange individual or small group lessons.
